How GC-MS Analysis Works?

GC-MS consists of two techniques performed consecutively within the same instrument.

GC – Gas Chromatography

Like a machine that separates substances through air, GC separates the compounds found in an essential oil, which may contain dozens or even hundreds of natural compounds. It does this based on their rate of evaporation and their movement through an ultra-fine column.

MS – Mass Spectrometry

Once each compound has been separated, MS scans the molecular fingerprint of each one to determine its molecular formula, molecular weight, and precise identity.

Why Is GC-MS So Important for Essential Oils?

Among countless products labelled “100% pure,” “organic,” or “natural,” identifying a truly pure essential oil can be a major challenge. By sight or scent alone, it is almost impossible to determine whether an essential oil has been diluted, contains synthetic fragrance, or has been mixed with chemical impurities.

For this reason, only GC-MS analysis can verify this objectively and scientifically. It is an analytical method that identifies the chemical composition of an essential oil down to individual molecules, helping confirm the product’s purity, safety, and true therapeutic value.

Is an Essential Oil Truly Pure?

For example, Lavender essential oil has characteristic levels of linalool and linalyl acetate. Peppermint is rich in menthol, while Clove contains a high concentration of eugenol.

When analysed by GC-MS, an unusual absence of key compounds or the presence of substances that do not belong to the natural composition of that essential oil is a strong indication that the oil has been blended, adulterated, or chemically processed.

Does the Essential Oil Retain Its Therapeutic Properties?

If distillation, storage, or blending is carried out incorrectly, important active compounds such as 1,8-cineole in eucalyptus or linalyl acetate in lavender can degrade, oxidise, or change in structure.

At that point, the essential oil may no longer deliver its intended benefits and may even cause unwanted reactions.

GC-MS is the tool that helps determine whether therapeutic compounds remain at effective concentrations and whether an essential oil has deteriorated because of heat, light, or solvents of unclear origin.

What Does a GC-MS Report Look Like?

A standard GC-MS report typically includes:

  • A Gas Chromatogram: peaks that represent compounds separated over time
  • An MS Output List: compound names, CAS numbers, molecular formulas, percentages, and retention times
  • A comparison with international reference standards (ISO/AFNOR) to determine the level of purity
